A Guide to Instilling Manners in Your Little Ones

Becoming a mom is beautiful, life-changing, and - let’s be honest- overwhelming. There are so many things I thought I knew, and so many surprises I could never have prepared for. In this post, 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Mom, I’m sharing the lessons no book or class ever covered. Whether you’re expecting your first baby or navigating the newborn stage, I hope these reflections make you feel less alone and a lot more prepared.
1. Sleep Deprivation Is Real (and It’s Okay to Ask for Help)
Everyone says “sleep when the baby sleeps,” but it’s never that easy. I wish I had asked for help sooner and let myself nap more often. Pro tip: comfy baby pajamas that zip easily at 2 a.m. diaper changes really do make those nights a little smoother.
2. Your Body Will Feel Different
Postpartum recovery takes time, and it’s not about “bouncing back.” It’s about learning to care for your body in a whole new way. Soft, breathable clothes made me feel more like myself while healing.
3. Feeding Isn’t Always Simple
Whether you breastfeed, formula feed, or do a combination, there will be challenges. I wish I had known that “fed is best” and that what matters most is what works for you and your baby.
4. Babies Love Being Swaddled
I quickly learned how soothing bamboo swaddles can be. They helped my baby feel secure and made naps more peaceful. That womb-like comfort was a lifesaver in the early weeks.
5. You’ll Google Everything
From “is this diaper rash normal?” to “how many layers should baby wear at night,” I was constantly looking things up. It’s part of learning, but it can also make you doubt yourself try not to let it.
6. Relationships Change
Motherhood shifts relationships - with your partner, family, and even yourself. Honest conversations and clear boundaries help, but change is part of the journey.
7. Postpartum Emotions Are Intense
From joy to tears to anxiety, emotions run high. I wish I had known how normal it was and how important it is to talk about those feelings with someone you trust.
8. Babies Don’t Need as Much “Stuff” as You Think
I bought so many gadgets that never got used. The truth is, essentials like baby pajamas, swaddles, and cozy blankets ended up being the things I reached for every single day.
9. Self-Care Isn’t Selfish
Taking a shower, enjoying a hot coffee, or walking alone made me a better mom. Little acts of self-care help you recharge and show up with more patience and love.
10. You’re Doing Better Than You Think
I wish someone had told me to let go of the guilt. Motherhood is messy, unpredictable, and beautiful. Trust yourself—you know your baby better than anyone.
Looking back, I wish I had read a post like this before becoming a mom. These 10 lessons remind me that while motherhood is hard, it’s also full of joy and growth. If you’re on this journey, know that you are not alone. And if you need little comforts along the way, soft baby pajamas, a cozy muslin swaddle, or a lightweight bamboo blanket can make those early days just a little easier for both you and your baby.
